Setting Up Uptime Monitoring
This step-by-step guide shows you how to set up uptime monitoring for your websites using Faciotech's monitoring service.
Prerequisites
- An active Faciotech account
- Your website URL(s) to monitor
- Contact information for alerts (email/phone)
Step 1: Access Monitoring Dashboard
- Log into your Faciotech Client Area
- Navigate to Services → Monitoring
- Click "Add New Monitor"
Step 2: Configure Monitor Settings
Basic Settings
- Monitor Name - A friendly name (e.g., "Main Website")
- URL - Full URL including https:// (e.g., https://yourdomain.com)
- Monitor Type - Usually "HTTP(S)" for websites
Check Frequency
Choose how often to check your site:
- 1 minute - Critical sites requiring immediate notification
- 5 minutes - Recommended for most websites
- 15 minutes - Suitable for less critical sites
- 30-60 minutes - Low-priority monitoring
Timeout Settings
- Timeout - How long to wait for a response (default: 30 seconds)
- If your site doesn't respond within this time, it's marked as down
Step 3: Set Up Alerts
Alert Contacts
- Click "Alert Contacts"
- Add email addresses for notifications
- Optionally add phone numbers for SMS alerts
Alert Conditions
- Alert after X failures - How many failed checks before alerting (1-3 recommended)
- This prevents false alarms from temporary glitches
Alert Frequency
- Repeat alerts - Get reminded if the site stays down
- Common setting: Every 30 minutes while down
Step 4: Advanced Options (Optional)
HTTP Authentication
If your site requires login:
- Enter username and password
- Useful for staging sites or protected areas
Expected Response
- Expected Status Code - Usually 200 (OK)
- Keyword Check - Verify specific text appears on the page
SSL Verification
- Enable to also monitor SSL certificate validity
- Get alerts before your certificate expires
Step 5: Save and Test
- Click "Create Monitor"
- The monitor will perform an initial check
- Verify the status shows as "Up"
- Test alerts by clicking "Send Test Alert"
Monitoring Multiple Sites
Repeat the process for each website or page you want to monitor:
- Main website (https://yourdomain.com)
- Subdomain sites (https://blog.yourdomain.com)
- Critical pages (/checkout, /login)
- API endpoints
Understanding Status
- ???? Up - Site is responding normally
- ???? Degraded - Site is slow but responding
- ???? Down - Site is not responding
- ⏸️ Paused - Monitoring is temporarily disabled
Best Practices
- Start with 5-minute checks, adjust based on needs
- Set 2-3 failures before alert to avoid false alarms
- Add multiple alert contacts for redundancy
- Monitor critical pages, not just the homepage
- Review monitor reports weekly
Troubleshooting
False Alerts
- Increase timeout if your site is slow
- Require more failures before alerting
- Check if your firewall is blocking monitor IPs
Not Receiving Alerts
- Verify email address is correct
- Check spam folder
- Send a test alert to verify
